The Questions

The Colbert Questionert

I found this on a parenthetical departure and thought they looked fun. Originally from Stephen Colbert's farewell episode from "The Late Night Show".

What's the best sandwich?
Turkey, bacon, avocado, lettuce, and chipotle tomato spread on ciabatta. Perfect stuff.
What was your first concert?
It was a jam band that I hadn't ever heard of called "Perpetual Groove" that my friend dragged me to. I was 19 and stoned, so it was a great time just vibing to the music. I actually saw them again a few years ago when they came back to town, which was a fun little throwback for myself.
What's one thing you own you should really throw out?
There are so many clothes that I've held on to because I have such good memories wearing them, but I'm probably never going to wear them again because they're not my style. I should really just donate them so that they go back from whence they came. Those, or the broken printer in my bedroom.
What is the scariest animal?
In my day to day life? Coyotes. Overall? Probably bears. Those fuckers are everywhere and they can tear you apart like it's nothing.
Apples or oranges?
Apples, there are so many different kinds of apples that it's no contest for me. I love Honeycrisps and Galas and green apples.
Have you ever asked someone for their autograph?
Just Disney characters at Disney World as a kid. I would be too embarassed to ask unless it was an event where they were already doing autographs.
Favorite smell?
The way an old bookstore smells. Like paper and dust and old coffee.
Least favorite smell?
Sewage. It's bad and it's somehow an on and off smell in my office at work.
Exercise: Is it worth it?
To a point, yeah. Some people go a bit overboard, but being active helps you not feel like total crap all the time. I should really do it more though.
Window or aisle?
Window, I like watching take off and landing.
Cats or dogs?
Dogs, if it wasn't obvious. I like cats, but I'm too needy for them.
Flat or sparkling?
Flat. Sparkling water tastes like baking soda to me.
You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: What is it?
This one's a hard one, but probably "Welcome to the Black Parade" by My Chemical Romance. I constantly go back to them as a band (and have a half-sleeve tattoo based off their lyrics) and once erased my whole iPod for that one song, so I probably wouldn't mind doing it again.
What do you think happens when we die?
The same thing as before we were born, most likely.
Describe the rest of your life in 5 words.
Good changes and relaxation, hopefully.

My name is Andrew, but you can call me whatever you want. I'm a guy living somewhere in the US. I work in IT and do some art, too.

6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.

7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
Pretty much everything. I love creating, designing, and most of all - talking about myself.

16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
Yup, you can read about it more on my colophon page.

I mean, I was more focused on design at first, but I've got everything set up pretty well, so the recent focus has been on actual content.

Not yet, but maybe someday. Not enough people visit my site to warrant all that for me.
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?

VSC (Visual Studio Code)
26. Why do you use that one?
It checks my HTML, autocompletes, and lets me set up a local server to preview my site.
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
Well, they're on the same host as my website, which is Neocities. Except for my button, which is on filegarden so that people can "hotlink" it.
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
I truly don't care. I just want a decent free webhost.
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
It takes up exactly 16.41MB as of this writing, including images!
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
Yup, it would be insane not to.
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
Simple. I used to love the websites with a million things going on, but I'm leaning more towards cleaner designs these days.
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
Yep, I do it on purpose, as explained in my colophon.

No? I can always just take a break (and have), but I won't quit for good. At least not for a long time.
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
I've got a good handful of mutuals on Neocities, but I'm not a very social guy.
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
A few of them? Mostly the people that my boyfriend shows it to.
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
Sure, I work on it all the time, so it gets updated pretty much daily.
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
I try not to change the overall design too much, mostly because it would be a CSS headache. I recently did a small overhaul, but that was only a few changes on the backend.
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
Me-focused! I suppose it's hobby-focused in that I post my art, but I don't ever talk about or post the process or anything like that.
39. Do you do web design professionally?
Well, I do this while I'm at work, so technically no, but I am getting paid while I do it.
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
Probably not, because clients aren't always the most... design-brained. I already do regular IT helpdesk stuff for my actual job.
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
For work, exclusively. Otherwise, no.
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
Nope, I'm here because I quit social media after the 2024 election. I didn't want to be a part of it anymore.
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
I have Discord, but I really only use it to voice chat with my friend Trevor while we play Minecraft.
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
Sometimes I'll listen to jazz, but a lot of it is made in silence.
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
Nope, what you see here is all I've got.
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
Well, they all have to do with me, so sort of. But I talk about travelling, my mental health bullshit, and other things, so also sort of not.
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
This is about as real as I can stand to be.
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
Not yet.
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
Sure. There are a few things that I wish I could change, but I usually figure out a way to do it with Javascript. They're perfect for what they are.
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
Flashing images, large amounts of ultra bright (eye-straining) colors.
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
Responsiveness, please! I want to look at your website, but it's broken unless I zoom out to 70%!
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
I try to use as much semantic HTML as possible, but sometimes a <div>'s gotta be a <div>.
53. Do you consider different browsers?
Not really, but everything should work across browsers. I try to only use fully-supported features.
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
Firefox - you can turn off the AI features, install AdBlock, and use keywords for your bookmarks for easy access.
55. And what OS are you on?
Windows
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
I'm just a few bad days away from switching to Linux at this point. I grew up using Windows, so it's familiar.
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
Yup! As much as possible, which should be 99%, besides the television page.
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
I'm not a fan, personally. Let me decide if I want to listen.
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
They're fun! I'm in No AI webring and waiting on approval for the ditherring webring. I just wish other hosts were better about taking down dead links/sites, because there are so many broken webrings kicking around.
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
I don't, but I do have some templates for some. I just don't think I'm passionate enough about most things to write about them at length. I do like seeing other people's, no matter what the actual content is.
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
I don't really know what this would mean.
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
Somewhere that I want to hang out and stay longer. I like hanging out on my own website, so I've met that criteria for myself.
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
I don't think of myself as one, but I suppose I am. I drew my profile picture, and everything in the ar(t)chive and the sketchbook are my creation.
64. What are your favourite resource sites?
I've listed them on my resources page.
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
In web design? I don't think so. The rest of life? Too many.
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
Read through some tutorials before you start trying to cobble things together! It'll be much easier.
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
I only hard code it if it's a single line and won't be re-used anywhere else. Otherwise, I like to keep my HTML as clean as possible.
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
Never heard of them, and they seem to be outdated.
69. How about table-based layouts?
They're very retro to me. They can look good, but I think a grid would probably work better.
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
I suppose I use a 2 column layout, but I'm not married to the idea or anything.
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
Probably the CSS. I spend a lot of time making sure things look good on different sizes of screens.
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
It reminds me too much of being 12 and not understanding how to actually make a website.
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
I've made the aforementioned layouts for shrine pages, but that's it.
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
I'd say an amateur, somewhere in the middle. I know a thing or two, but I'm still pretty reliant on looking things up.
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
For sure, I love seeing how other people achieve cool things.
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
Trial and error, and looking at other people's source code. I did a HTML and CSS course over a decade ago, so whatever base knowledge was left from that helped.
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
No, there's probably just a better way of doing it.
78. Thoughts on floating elements?
They can be neat.
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
em for text and spacing involving text, px for my "column" widths, and anything else where it makes sense.
80. Do you have a favourite font?
The one I'm using now, I suppose.
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
I don't know about that. I'm a bit of a control freak. I did used to run a blog with my friend, which was fun.
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
Every day. I love clicking "random" on webrings to find new sites.
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
Yeah, if they're interesting or I really like the design. I would be flattered if someone bookmarked mine.
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
Hopefully the cohesiveness.
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
Not really. I'm not even that interested in technology at my job. I'm not really a tech guy, weirdly enough.
86. How often and for how long are you online?
Too much. If I'm not on here, I'm on Tumblr (which I don't consider social media, at least the way I use it).
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
Me
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
Never heard of her.
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
Nah, it's just Javascript for this guy.
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
I've never used one, so I have no opinion. I do think people should try making their own sites though.
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
Neocities keeps one for me, but I think 90% of the hits are me looking at my own website.
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
I used to spend time in forums, but all of the ones I was in closed down a long time ago.
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
Most content I write directly in VSC, but journal entries get pre-written in a program called MarkText. It basically just puts <p> tags around each paragraph for me.
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
Some people have called me cool, so sure? I don't think I'm very cool myself though.
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
Sure, in a general sense. I've destroyed a lot of art and diaries that I wish I hadn't. As far as websites go, I keep all of my old designs in an archive out of public view.
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
If I couldn't update it, I would likely be dead or in a coma, so I guess I would leave it up. I don't really see any reason to take it down.
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
I think I reveal enough.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
Applications are now open, drop a line in my chat!
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
I love talking about myself

100 Odd Questions

From Sam's Solar System, which I saw on Mixtapes & Dialtones and wanted to do too.

  1. Would you rather never needing to sleep again or never needing to eat again?

Never eat, for sure. I hate having to pick different things to eat every day, making sure I'm getting a variety of nutritious foods, and the actual experience of eating and digesting. I would 100% eat those Jetsons food pills over the current arrangement.

  2. If your brain was a place how would it look like?

Like a cluttered old bookstore that looks tiny, but you keep finding tiny nooks and crannies that turn into winding hallways. Books and various other papers strewn about everywhere, but the shopkeeper knows exactly where everything is and can find the book you want based off a vague description.

  3. When playing 2 truths 1 lie what are your 3 go-to facts?

I used to own ferrets, I've never eaten fresh pineapple, and I've climbed an active volcano.

  4. What is a topic you could talk about for hours?

Probably House MD, if I had to pick something "normal". Otherwise, anything that I can complain about. I complaining!

  5. Which songs do you normally gravitate towards when doing karaoke?

I don't do karaoke, but gun to my head, I'd probably choose a big pop hit from the 90s/2000s. Something like Backstreet Boys or Britney Spears.

  6. What is a word that you wish existed in your language but doesn't?

A word for when you feel lonely in a crowded room.

Maybe Mr. Freeze? Poor guy just wants to save his wife and had an unfortunately punnable last name.

  8. What was your favorite flash game when you were a kid?

I used to adore the whole series of jmbt02's elephant games on Armor Games as a kid. I was a bit older when Elephant Quest came out, but I loved it so much.

  9. How do you rate stuff? 0-5 stars, 1-10 points, a secret third option? do you use fractions / decimals?

0-5 star scale with half-star increments. I've been wanting to start rating things on a quadrant system I saw recently, but that almost feels harder to pin down exactly where I would want to put a piece of media.

  10. What is the coolest flag?

I had to look at a list of flags for this, because I'm not a flag guy, but I think Seychelles' flag is the most aesthetically pleasing, while Albania's flag is just straight cool.

  11. What's the best halloween costume you've ever pulled off?

My favorite was when me and my friends (and my dog!) did the Scooby Doo gang, complete with homemade dog-safe Scooby Snacks. It was very funny to eat the same biscuits my dog was eating, especially the drunker I got.

I'm sure my gimmick would be something about how I'm short, since I am. Little Mac type of vibe. Except I bite

I keep everything in my bag - I'll lose things if I unpack them all.

Really bad, whiny folk punk music, unfortunately. Let's all be thankful I don't know how to make music

Gregory House of House MD. He is me and I am him.

  22. Without considering rent prices how would your ideal home look like?

Honestly, my place now is pretty ideal. We've got a nice porch, a bay window, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, and all of the normal appliances. It would be nice to have a bigger kitchen and possibly another room, and I'd love an actual screened-in porch. Maybe a fireplace, but it would only get used 2 months out of the year. A big backyard with a garden and a fire pit and a workshop for me to build things in.

    Stubbing my toe, I suppose

  25. If you could pet any animal without there being any risk of getting attacked by it in the process which one would you choose?

    Boing!

Throw up the classic surfer hand sign.

  41. Do you wear accesories? how often?

My ex-girlfriend made me wear a (small) chain around my neck in her attempt to make me an e-boy. When we broke up, I tried to take it off but then my neck felt naked. I've probably taken it off 5 times since 2021.

My current life, mostly. I had much different plans and this was all supposed to be temporary.

Mac and cheese. The baked mac and cheese in my cookbook is so good.

  44. What socks are you wearing right now?

None, but I usually wear merino wool socks for my sweaty-ass feet.

  45. How often do you take pictures of yourself?

Almost never. It's actually a bad habit, because I think I only have 20 pictures of myself from the past few years. Most of those, my boyfriend took.

  46. Where is your favorite place to hang out?

My house and also a little cafe/bar downtown, but they don't carry the liquor I like anymore.

  47. If you died and became a ghost who, where or what would you haunt for the rest of eternity?

I'd definitely haunt my boyfriend. I would want to see what he gets up to.

  48. What is something that we deem as normal but is actually pretty weird when you think about it?

The whole society thing. We're animals standing up and putting on silly costumes, making silly noises at each other to make some silly paper move around. I try not to think about it too hard or I get a little weird about it.

  49. What is your most useless skill?

I always plug in USBs the right way the first time. Slightly useful in my work as an IT guy, but not very.

Like my current one? I won't let the fame change me.
